Situated in the sub-region of Baixo Vouga, between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountainous areas of the adjoining districts, the district of Aveiro, presents a varied landscape, characterized by a long sandy coast, an estuary and by several parks and gardens.
His Moliceiros (Local boats) like gondolas, natural lagoons, with an elegant nineteenth-century architecture and cobblestone passageways allows the combination between the old and modern.
The district capital is the city of Aveiro, known as the "Portuguese Venice", crossed by a canal and considered one of the most beatifull destinations of Portugal, due to its colorful Moliceiros, to the buildings in pastel colors and Art Nouveau and its quiet urban atmosphere.
In Aveiro, there is located the tallest lighthouse in Portugal and the second highest from the Iberian Peninsula, in Barra beach, built between 1885 and 1893, with 62 meters high. In the district there is also the city of Ílhavo, located at the seafront that displays the maritime heritage of Aveiro, and where there is the Vista Alegre porcelain factory. The soft eggs are the gastronomic specialty from the district.
The district area, is 2808 km ², with a resident population in 2011 of 735 790 inhabitants.
