The Calheta Youth Center it is an ancient house of Madeira traditional characteristic, situated at the south coast of the Madeira Island, which was adapted for youth hostel. From the same, it is possible to discover the most characteristic traces of the region, one of the best places for the practice of surf.
At the Youth Center, there are four rooms, hostel kitchen, living room, sports field and parking.
Calheta is the extensive municipality of Madeira, having as visit card, the protected landscape of the Laurissilva Forest, considered a world heritage by UNESCO, in 1999 and the preservation of traditional activities such as production of banana, wine and cane sugar.
It keeps its agricultural and fishing side, having had in other times, the production of sugar cane, being actually a highly developed region, with industries and services, as well as a tourism growth.
It highlights the Manueline Church of Espiríto Santo, which has a tabernacle of ebony and silver which was donated by the king Manuel I, the House of Misericórdia, of 1535, the Casa das Mudas Arts Centre, in a modern architecture and that promotes the arts and the culture of the region, in a complex that houses expositive space, library, auditorium, shops, restoration and pedagogical services.
It is also worth to know one of the few engines of cane sugar still in operation on the island of Madeira: The Engine of the Sociedade de Engenhos da Calheta.
