Projected in 1999, to celebrate the festive year of 2001, in that the city of Porto was the European Capital of Culture , only came to be built in 2005.
The project, started from an international architectural competition realized in 1999, who chosed the Dutch architect, Rem Koolhaas, from the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, to follow the respective construction.
The excavations began in the same year of 1999, on the space of the old Remise of Porto, at the Rotunda da Boavista , used for the collection and repair of the electric cars that ran in the city of Porto, having been inaugurated on the 15th April 2005.
The House of Music, was as well, the first building constructed in Portugal exclusively dedicated to the music, both in the field of public presentation , as well as in the field of the artistic formation and of creation, becoming in the principal concert hall of Porto.
Integrating the process of the urban renewal of the city of Porto, in a network of cultural facilities to the metropolitan and global scale, it is an institution that develops a comprehensive and innovative cultural project and that assumes the dynamics of the music of Portugal and internationally, in several areas of music, from classical to jazz, fado to electronic, of the great international production projects with more experimental bent.
The House of Music promotes concerts , recitals and performances , as well as promotion of gatherings of musicians and musicologists, investing in the search of the origins of the Portuguese music and its role in betting on music education. It also acts as a cultural platform open to the intersections between the music and other areas of the artistic creation and knowledge.
